02 Alert:USAID
Editor's Note
United States Agency for International Development is a US self-proclaimed 'humanitarian' organization. But it isn't just that with the milk of human kindness dripping for the under-privileged and the deprived. It is a shrewd business enterprise. As early as januray this year, it has begun planning for the reconstruction of a 'war-torn' Iraq. Well, well, well, why hope or plan for peace when war affords umpteen opportunities for business? Compassion, US compassion it would seem is only a facade for trade. the US is indeed a nation of traders.

01 Thefig-leaf of the Geneva Convention
Editor's Note
When Iraqi television showed footage of Anglo-American prisoners of war, US cried 'foul' and declared that it would try Saddam Hussein and his regime for war crimes if he continued to show their armed personnel over Iraqi TV. The US of course cited the Geneva Convention to pad up its grouse with international law. The following are two URLs which expose the respect that Britain and the US have for the Geneva Convention. The law is indeed the last resort of criminals.

01 TheEU Emerging From the Shadow Of The U.S
Editor's Note
For our readers:I watched the news report, "Asia Today" on the BBC in the evening on Thursday, 23rd January. A Labour MP just returned to Britain from a tour of India which included the obligatory political and diplomatic sight-seeing tour of J&K, rather patronisingly remarked that the recent spat of words between India and Pakistn over the ill-treatment of India's diplomat in Islamabad as being 'Childish and rather immature and periodic'. Imagine my delight when I read the following news report the very next day on the front page of The Hindu! I suppose this is war of words of epic proportions as befitting whitemen!!
Europe is not just France and Germany: Rumsfeld
This news report on the online edition of The Hindu unfortunately does not carry the response of several ministers in France to Rumsfeld's arrogance. Titled, "Arrogance, Says France", the news report on the front page is as follows:

Paris, Jan, 23. A host of French ministers reacted angrily on Thursday to the U.S. Secretary of Defence, Donald Rumsfeld's dismissal of France and Germany as the "old Europe', saying his remarks underscored America's arrogance.

But on a visit to Berlin, the French President, Jacques Chirac immediately called for calm to prevent the row from degenerating into a full-blown diplomatic crisis.

Mr.Chirac's spokesperson, Catherine Colonna, said the French President considered the debate on a war with Iraq "legitimate" but wanted to see it "take place with seriousness and calmness".

His more conciliatory tone as not echoed by Ministers in Paris. The Finance Minister, Francis Mer said he was "profoundly vexed" by the remarks. "I wanted to remind everyone that this 'old Europe' has reslience and is capable of bouncing back", he told LCI television. "And it will show it, in time".

The Government's official spokesperson, Jean Francois Cope said Mr.Rumsfeld would do better to listen to the 'wise' advise of the 'old Europe' gained through its long history". - AP.
